Session (36) Open Studios

Please join us for Open Studios with our Session (36) Fellows – Widline Cadet, Bruno Cancado, Angie Cruz, Ryan Falkowitz and Katherine Augusta Mayfield – from 4 to 6 pm, on Saturday, August 10, 2019. Come see and hear the work that was created by our fellows during their six weeks in residence on Fishers Island and help us celebrate the close of the 36th session of our Fellowship Program.

Wildine Cadet
Widline Cadet is a Haitian-born artist. Her practice is deeply rooted in her experience as an emigrant/immigrant/migrant and explores the racial and cultural tensions and identity shifts that occur with dis-placement. Her performances, photographs, and videos function as investigations of selfhood in the context of statelessness, nationalism-what it means to be a citizen of a place, and both public (the history of said place) personal history (one’s history in relation to said place). Cadet is a recipient of a 2013 Mortimer-Hays Brandeis Traveling Fellowship, as well as a 2018 Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture artist in resident. Cadet earned her B.A. in photography from The City College of New York and is currently an MFA candidate at Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Bruno Cancado
*Bruno Cancado was born Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 1981. He graduated in Communication Studies from PUC-Minas 2003; acquired a B.F.A. from Escola Guignard/UEMG in 2010, and an M.F.A. from Cornell University 2019. Since 2010 he has exhibited in Brazil and abroad, including the solo shows “Jardim”, at Central Galeria, Sao Paulo, Brazil; and “Trinca”, at AM Galeria, Belo Horizonte, Brazil; He was an artist-in-residence at: Instituto Sacatar, Brazil; Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, USA; Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, USA. He was awarded the 2014 ICCO-SP Art Residency Grant in the 10th Sao Paulo International Art Fair. His work is held in the collection of the Museu de Arte Contemporânea – MAC Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Museu de Arte do Rio – MAR, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

• Angie Cruz
  Angie Cruz is the author of two novels, Soledad (2001) and Let It Rain Coffee (2005). She is the editor of Aster(ix), a literary/arts journal, and her work has appeared in Small Axe, Gulf Coast, Callaloo, Virginia Quarterly Review, and Miami Rail. She teaches creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh and her novel, Dominicana is forthcoming with Flatiron Book in 2019. For more info visit angiecruz.com.

Ryan Falkowitz
Ryan Falkowitz is a self-taught artist with a focus in sculpture. Most recently he has exhibited with 106 Green at NADA NY (2018). Previous exhibitions include Home Edition at Essex Flowers (2018), Punching Up at SUNY Purchase (2017) and Maybe I’m Doing It Wrong at 106 Green in Brooklyn, NY (2016). Falkowitz’s work has been reviewed in ArtNews (A Critic’s Diary; March: Court in Boston, More Art Fairs in New York, Dumplings, a Raucous Dinner Party, September 13, 2018) and the New York Times (Galleries Shift Shape to Survive in a Changing Art World; June 23, 2016) and is also featured in Invalid Format : An Anthology of Triple Canopy Volume 2, published by the Sternberg Press (2012).

Katherine Augusta Mayfield
Katherine Augusta Mayfield recently completed her MFA in fiction at Columbia University. Her work has been published in No Tokens and The Best American Nonrequired Reading, and she is the recipient of residencies and fellowships from The Vermont Studio Center, The New York Summer Writers Workshop, Rufus Stone, and Gullkistan. She is at work on The Reenactors, a novel in which it becomes popular for families to hire actors to impersonate their dead. Katie is a current Emerging Writers Fellow at The Center for Fiction and lives in Queens with her wife and tortoiseshell cat.
